sustainable and responsible mining
Ethically sourced metals, minerals, stones, and gemstones refer to raw materials that have been extracted and produced in a responsible and sustainable manner, with consideration for the social and environmental impacts of the extraction process.
For metals, ethical sourcing may involve ensuring that the mining process meets certain standards for worker safety, labor practices, and environmental impact. This may include using safer and more sustainable mining techniques, reducing waste and pollution, and ensuring that workers are treated fairly and paid a living wage.
Similarly, for gemstones, ethical sourcing may involve ensuring that the mining and cutting processes are done in a way that minimizes the environmental impact and upholds human rights. This may include using fair labor practices, reducing the use of harmful chemicals, and avoiding mining in areas with sensitive ecosystems or cultural significance.
To ensure that metals and gemstones are ethically sourced, various certification programs and standards have been developed, such as the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), Fairmined certification, and the Kimberley Process for diamonds. These programs aim to provide assurance to consumers that the materials they are purchasing have been produced in a responsible and sustainable manner.
However, small-scale mines may face challenges in joining certification programs for ethical sourcing of metals and gemstones. These programs can be expensive and require significant resources to implement, which may be difficult for small-scale mines to afford. We work directly with small-scale miners to ensure that they are paid fair prices for their materials and that they are using sustainable mining practices. By creating direct relationships with small-scale mines, we are helping to promote ethical sourcing and supporting sustainable mining practices in a more affordable and accessible way.
